5 maquilas closed in 4 months
Chihuahua, mexico,- According to data from the Mexican Statistics Agency, Instituto Nacional de Estadistica Geografia e Informatica, in the first four months of this year five plants either left or merged with other plants.
The Agency’s monthly report states that upon ending 2009 there were 339 IMMEX Programs (maquiladoras and exporting companies) authorized for companies in Ciudad Juarez.
However, upon closing April the number was 334, which means that Ciudad Juarez’ economic pillar is retracting.
This figure is even worse when compared to last April, when there were 340 plants, which means that 6 companies have left since. As far as the close future is concerned, Soledad Maynez, leader of maquiladoras association, said that they are expecting a good second semester of the year, and that automotive industry is expected to stay as spearhead for employment.
