Lack of safety taking away employment from maquilas
Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua,- In February, maquiladora industry in Ciudad Juarez lost one thousand 600 jobs, which was attributed by Maquiladoras Association (AMAC) to violence, that has increased in the last few years.
Soledad Maynez Bribiescas, Chairwoman, said that the drop was expected, because Juarez was put before the eyes of the world as a dangerous and unstable city, and therefore expansions and arrival of new companies were halted.
“We thought there would be from 15 to 17 thousand jobs in the first quarter; there is usually a drop in these months, but in January recruitment started strong; however, lack of safety hit us bad”, Ms. Maynez Bribiescas said.
