Chihuahua, Mexico,- Domestic industry in the State of Chihuahua is openly experiencing recovery: figures up to March show production posted a 22.85 year-to-year growth.
According to data from the Mexican Statistics Agency, Instituto Nacional de Estadistica, Geografia e Informatica (INEGI), production by domestic industry – excluding maquiladoras – had the largest growth since the crisis started.
INEGI states that throughout 2008 and 2009 production by domestic industry in Chihuahua posted a drop which even reached 25%. However in the last four months measured by INEGI there has been year-to-year growth. In December increase in production was 1.4%, while in January the increase was 4.6%, in February 12.9% and in March 22.8%.
Even if domestic industry is not strong in Chihuahua, in the last few months there have been serious efforts to encourage this activity.
Domestic industry in Ciudad Juarez – mainly focused as maquiladora suppliers – currently employs close to 25 thousand people, against the almost 150 thousand employed by maquiladora industry.
