Average salary in maquilas on the raise
Chihuahua, Chihuahua,- Average salaries received by employees in export maquiladora industry in Ciudad Juarez have gone up 28% between October 2007 and December 2009, according to data from the Mexican Statistics Agency, Instituto Nacional de Estadistica, Geografia e Informatica (INEGI).
This information agrees with the 4.17% increase in the number of hours worked by each employee. According to INEGI, in October 2007, when the US economic crisis started affecting employment in Ciudad Juarez maquiladoras, average monthly paycheck was MXP$5,467.
By December 2009, the last month registered, average wage in maquiladora industry in Ciudad Juarez was MXP$6,992, which means a 28% increase.
Salaries and wages have started rebounding and by last December the economic contribution was very similar to even month in 2007, when workers in the sector received a total amount of MXP$1.179 billion, against the MXP$1.174 spent in December 2009 at the city.
