Mexico City,- In 2011, in addition to paper invoices, there will be digital fiscal vouchers or invoices prepared with electronic means, and therefore taxpayers must get familiar with their use.

This type of invoices have been in use since last year; they contain a folio, digital stamp assigned by SAT (equivalent in Mexico to US IRS) and a chain of characters containing the data of both, the issuing and the receiving parties, stored in an XML file.

This digital voucher will continue to be used in 2011, but with new safety elements, such as date of certification. Use of this type of invoices is compulsory for companies with annual income over MXP$4 million, but if there will be a transition period.

Marco Bolaños, specialist in electronic invoicing with GS1 Mexico, pointed-out that a taxpayer may receive this invoice by e-mail, in a USB device or with a PDF file extension, all of them fiscally valid.

Mr. Bolaños recommends validity be verified when an electronic invoice is received; which may be done in SAT website, inputting the data requested, such as invoice number, folio and year of approval.
