Tehuacan, Puebla,- In the first issue of the program “Volkswagen, For the Love to the Planet”, the research project at a natural protected area that won was “Geographical Evaluation-Preservation of Endangered Cactaceae Species at Tehuacan-Cuicatlan Biosphere Reserve” under the direction of Dr. Oswaldo Tellez from Iztacala Divison of the University of Mexico, UNAM.Invited by Dr. Tellez, officers from Volkswagen de Mexico visited this important Biosphere Reserve, considered the richest dessert in the world with 3 thousand species of plants in 5 thousand square kilometers (some 500,000 hectares), to get familiar with the project’s advancement.
Dr. Oswaldo Tellez informed that data obtained “present a reality that had not been considered…” and show that the situation is more serious than they had thought. 75% of the species studied to date are vulnerable, which puts them at risk of facing extinction.
He added that some factors that exert and influence on the problem are illegal extraction, change of use of soil and climatic change. The program “Volkswagen, For the Love to the Planet” grants the most important economic incentives to research on biological preservation in Mexico and recently called for nominations for the 2008 issue.
