New York, USA.- With an 8% increase in silver production, Mexico consolidated in 2011 its position as the main silver producer in the world, according to the Annual Report from the Silver Institute, published today.According to the study, Mexico produced last year 4,753 tons of silver, in spite of a drop in production in one of the two largest silver mines in the world, in Fresnillo, Zacatecas.
“Even if the mine in Fresnillo was below its capacity, there were other mines that compensated such drop in production”, Philip Klapwijk, one of the Report’s authors said in an interview with Notimex.
Mexico recovered in 2010 its title as the world’s main silver producer, outdoing Peru. Last year this position was consolidated and, according to Klapwijk, the trend is to reaffirm this leadership in 2012.
