Mexico.- Hershey´s, the largest candy bars manufacturer in the United States, announced a joint venture with the Mexican organization Agroindustrias Unidas de Cacao in order to help restore cacao plantations in Mexico.
The initiative will disburse US$2.8 million within 10 years. Cacao plantations in southern Mexico have been decimated throughout a decade, mainly due to the propagation of moniliasis.
Mexico Cacao Project will be launched to provide, within the next 10 years, cacao trees capable of withstanding this disease, in addition to training farmers on crops renovation and good agriculture practices.
The purpose of the project is increasing income of families devoted to growing cacao and contributing to sustainable global supply.
