Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua.- In addition to a bill to create a chain of supply for maquiladora industry, a strategy is needed to develop companies with a level of commitment that the industry finds convincing, according to the National Chamber of Processing Industry, Camara Nacional de la Industria de la Transformacion (Canacintra) and Desarrollo Economico del Norte (DEN), an organization devoted to promoting economic development in northern Mexico.
Hector Nuñez Polanco, Coordinator, DEN, said that setting a legal framework to facilitate the chain of supply is good, but more work has to be done to generate a domestic industry that produces primary supplies, which are integrated into the final product.
He further said that up to now most of the products supplied by Mexican companies to maquiladoras are secondary supplies, i.e. things that the company needs to operate, but not those that go inside the product.
He said that what Juarez needs is advancing fast on this issue, because this is how companies may generate better jobs and greater value added.
