Mexico City- Due to US Dollar’s weakness, the Italian company Fiat is analyzing the possibility to produce in North America their Alfa Romeo model for the US market in 2009, as well as building a plant in America, specifically in Mexico, according to a specialized magazine in the European automotive sector, Automotive News Europe.Said magazine affirms that the plant Fiat is planning to build will be located in Mexico, and would serve North and South America markets, because vehicles demand in South America is growing faster than offer and Mexico would be strategic. In 2007 Fiat had a 217% increase in sales in Mexico, selling 3,300 automobiles and tripling the more than one thousand units sold in 2006.
Sources close to Fiat in Mexico assure that for the time being there is nothing defined and that it is necessary to wait for the Company to make an official announcement about the possible installation of a factory in America; “These news gained relevance – the rumor of the installation of a plant in Mexico – because Sergio Marchionne, Fiat’s CEO, talked last month before analysts about the need for a larger production capacity in Latin America, when he further said that North America could be part of the solution, especially before the introduction of Alfa brand; and from there the urpose of building a new plant, even if neither then nor now are there any details on this issue”.
