Mexico City.- Automobiles production in Mexico hit a record last March, while exports also shot up, the Mexican Automotive Industry Association, Asociacion Mexicana de la Industria Automotriz (AMIA), informed last Thursday. Production went up 9.4% to 268,625 units when compared to March 2011, while exports posted 22.7% year-to-year increase, reaching 236,599 units.
Automotive industry, mainly devoted to exports, represents around 3% of Mexican Gross Domestic Product (GDP). AMIA gathers business units in Mexico of the American assemblers Ford, General Motors and Chrysler; the Japanese Honda, Nissan and Toyota; the German Volkswagen and the Italian Fiat.
“Total production reached in March 2012 is the highest posted ever for a month of March in Mexico”, AMIA said in a press release. Mexico sold abroad 84.7% of automobiles produced last March.
