Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua.- Tariffs charged by the USA on Electrolux products made in Ciudad Juarez, for up to 72.4% for washing machines and 21.72% for refrigerators, threaten maquiladoras at the city, specialists argued. Specialists fear this tariffs policy could be extended to other products made by maquiladora industry, claiming that exporters in Mexico sell products under their cost.
Last Monday, the US Department of Commerce set tariffs between 33.30% and 72.41% on washing machines produced in Mexico, based on a denounce filed by Whirlpool, who stopped exporting such home appliances to the US market and transferred their operations there, in a nationalistic effort aimed to generate employment.
The US Department of Commerce determined that manufacturers from Mexico were selling washing machines at the United States for prices 33.30% to 72.41% under their fair market value, and therefore set tariffs for such percentages.
