Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua.- Six maquiladoras in Ciudad Juarez are under a “technical stoppage” due to an orders shortage, as was explained by Jesus Jose Diaz Monarrez, Leader of the Workers Union Confederacion de Trabajadores de Mexico, who said that this is mainly due to the global economic crisis, which causes a decrease in demand. The companies under technical stoppage belong to the automotive, home appliances and electronics branches, mainly. During technical stoppages, workers receive part of their salary and work part time; companies resort to this whenever there is a drop in orders, reducing labor needs. It is a scheme that prevents laying off employees, who keep a portion of their pay and benefits, such as Christmas bonus, vacation and social security.
