Mexico City.- Geothermal energy is thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth; e.g. magma or water bodies that become steam, a resource that is injected into turbines, condensing back as it passes and going back to subsoil, this water is not wasted away. The Electric Research Institute, Instituto de Investigaciones Electricas, says that “currently, geothermal resources may be used not only to generate electric power, but in a wide range of activities, such as heating, food processing, wool washing and drying, fermentation, paper industry, sulfuric acid, cement manufacturing and fabrics dyeing, among others”.
Geo-thermoelectric potential in Mexico, with hot dry rock resources that may be developed with geothermal technology equals 24,700 megawatts, with a maximum depth of 3,000 meters.
According to the Inter-American Development Bank, this technical potential is 25 times greater than all the geo-thermoelectric capacity installed in Mexico and around 48% of total electric power capacity installed in Mexico for public service.
