Distrito Federal.- Mexico joined the negotiations for Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) right when some of the most complicated subjects are being discussed, such as intellectual property, state-owned companies and competition, Frank Samolis, Partner in Patton Boggs, the lobbying firm, explained.
In addition, current political times both in Mexico and in the United States complicates the negotiating position and the agenda for an agreement which is expected to be closed as soon as possible, according to Mr. Samolis, who is acting as lobbyist between the private sector and legislators on international trade matters in the United States.
A new round of negotiations was held last week in San Diego, where neither Mexico nor Canada (new TPP members) participated; expectations were that some of the less complex subjects would be closed, but no conclusions were reached yet.
Before this year is over, two encounters more will be held, one in September in Virginia and another one in December, at an undisclosed location; it will only be in this last meeting when Mexico may participate as an active negotiator.
