Monterrey, Mexico.—Mazda Motor Corp. abandoned their plans to export automobiles to Brazil from the plant they are building in Mexico, Nikkei, the Japanese financial newspaper, reported.
According to Nikkei, Mazda has reached the conclusion that the cost of vehicles assembled in Mexico will not be competitive in Brazil. It further says that Mazda is now planning to start producing in Brazil as of 2014.
In February, when amendments to ACE 55 were being discussed with Brazil, Leopoldo Orellana, President, Mazda Motor de Mexico, said that if amendments were materialized, Mazda would diversify their sales.
Mazda is currently building a vehicles assembly plant in Salamanca, Guanajuato, investing US$500 million, to assemble Mazda 2 and Mazda 3 models for the domestic market and to be exported to Central America and South America.
