Mexico City – The difference between volume maquila and differentiated products maquila is that the former does not generate any value added to the company, while the latter provides the required expertise, both in processes and design, to achieve high value production. Specifically regarding garments-textile branch, Sergio Lopez de la Cerda, President of the National Chamber of Garments Industry, Camara Nacional de la Industria del Vestido (Canaive), spoke about the case of four Mexican companies located in southern Mexico, which provide maquila services with value added products to transnational companies, which gave them the required know-how to develop their own brands and designs.
Unlike the traditional maquila scheme, where one worker makes one sole process, this new productive model requires workers’ specialization and versatility, for they interact with other employees, exchange ideas to improve operations and have the ability to perform two or three different processes.
