Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua.- In the first quarter of this year, maquiladora industry in Ciudad Juarez gained 11,162 jobs, according to data from Maquiladoras Association, Asociacion de Maquiladoras Asociacion Civil (AMAC), based on Social Security figures.Jose Luis Armendariz Bailon, Chairman, AMAC, said that the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) reported that last March 3,011 jobs were created by the sector. According to the report, maquiladora industry in Ciudad Juarez currently employs 203,511 people.
Armendariz Bailon said that even if no new maquiladoras have been installed in the city, corporations already established here have started growing again. He also said that the largest growth is in the automotive area.
Mr. Armendariz further said that another sector that is also experiencing a considerable rebound is electronics. He said that with the 11,000 jobs created in the first quarter, the 20,000 jobs goal set early this year remains firm.
He also said that there are at least 4 new companies interested in investing in Ciudad Juarez, from China, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan.
