Ciudad juarez, Chihuahua.- Four years after the crisis started there are still 70,554 people in Ciudad Juarez who have not been able to recover their jobs. According to data from the Mexican Social Security (IMSS), in October 2007 Juarez reached its peak in employment with 384,548 workers registered with IMSS.
As of that date, the mortgage crisis in the USA caused a drop in consumption and therefore less production by local maquiladoras, to the extent that a year and a half later, in May 2009, one out of every four jobs had been lost, i.e. 91,940 jobs. Since that date, in 2.5 years, barely 21,386 jobs have been recovered in Juarez.
Miguel Angel Calderon Rodriguez, Vice-president, State of Chihuahua Economists Association, pointed-out that a way of going back to the same number of jobs as in pre-crisis times would be promoting Ciudad Juarez as an industrial center.
