Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua.- Dropping automobile sales in the United States could cause another setback on industrial employment in Ciudad Juarez, which already lost 400 jobs last month, economists said.
Miguel Angel Calderon Rodriguez, Vice-Chairman of State of Chihuahua Economists Association Colegio de Economistas del Estado de Chihuahua, said that the fact that US economy does not rebound and a drop in vehicles sales could lead to think that companies in Ciudad Juarez devoted to auto parts manufacture, which account for around 30%, will shrink.
Automobile sales grew only 8.9% in July, to reach 1.15 million units sold, keeping the annual estimate of 14.1 million.
Calderon Rodriguez reminded that it was precisely the automotive industry that helped maquiladoras generate more than 4,000 jobs here in the first 5 months of the year. He further said that this fall in automobiles market will most surely have an impact on jobs generation in what is left of the year.
