Mexico City.- Upon closing 2011, Mexican automotive industry reached a production record, by assembling 2.5 million vehicles, the largest volume ever in Mexico, the Mexican Automotive Industry Association, Asociacion Mexicana de la Industria Automotriz (AMIA), informed.
2 million 557 thousand 550 automobiles and light trucks were assembled, of which Nissan contributed with 23.7%, General Motors with 21.3%, Volkswagen with 19.9%, Ford with 18.1% and Chrysler with 10.9%.
The remainder was divided between Fiat with 2.3%, Toyota with 1.9% and Honda with 1.8%, according to figures from AMIA.
Eduardo Solis, President, AMIA, pointed-out that such record production is due to the opening of more export markets and growth in some markets, such as South America.
