Mexico City,- In the first nine months of the year only, companies in the auto parts sector laid .off 15 thousand 600 workers, per a report by Mexican Automotive System, Sistema Automotor Mexicano (Sisam). However, experts think employment cut-down will be even larger between the last quarter of 2008 and the first of 2009, as a consequence of the world economic crisis that has stricken this industry.
5 thousand 200 jobs were lost in the auto parts industry in the first half of 2008, and 10 thousand 400 more were lost in the third quarter.
“The negative effects on employment are the most serious in auto parts industry because its operations are based on direct and indirect exports to the USA”, Sisam’s report states.
These data do not include the effects on employment of technical stoppages announced by GM, Chrysler, Nissan and VW, which started this month to reduce operations and will stay in the first weeks of 2009.
As a result of said stoppages, some production lines might be eliminated and at least two companies, TRW among them, which employs one thousand 500 people are at stake.
