Last February, five maquiladora plants closed their doors in Ciudad Juarez, but in even term the sector’s labor force grew with 2,996 jobs. According to data from the Mexican Statistics Agency, Instituto Nacional de Estadistica, Geografia e Informatica (INEGI), in the annual comparison, i.e. between February 2011 and February 2012, Ciudad Juarez lost 13 maquiladora companies.
However, during such term the number of employees working for maquiladora industry kept growing. INEGI data further show that maquiladora industry is still far from recovering from the crisis.
Between October 2007 and June 2009, maquiladoras in Ciudad Juarez cut down 62,338 out of the 217,901 direct jobs they had. Recovery by maquiladora industry in Juarez has been among the slowest, since they are still to recover 35,307 jobs (16.2%) to reach the number they had in 2007.
