ABOUT CIEMEX-WEFA
CIEMEX-WEFA, the Center for Econometric Research on Mexico, has been forecasting the
Mexican economy longer than any other institution. In fact, our econometric model of
Mexico was the worlds first forecasting model of a developing economy.
Originally a part of the University of Pennsylvanias Economic
Research Unit, CIEMEX was founded in 1969 by Dr. Abel Beltran-del-Rio, a leading
Penn-trained economist and a native of Mexico, and Dr. Lawrence R. Klein, a Nobel prize
winner for his pioneering work in econometrics.
In the early 1970s. CIEMEX became a part of Wharton
Econometric Forecasting Associates (WEFA), an offshoot of Penns Economic Research
Unit, and its forecasts of the Mexican economy were made commercially available for the
first time.
Public and private institutions in Mexico were CIEMEXs first
clients, eager for model-based forecasts produced by the research arm of a prestigious
university. Soon organizations in the U.S., having begun to incorporate economic forecasts
into their business planning, added their names to CIEMEXs client list.
In 1986, CIEMEX-WEFA became an independent organization. Now, as a
joint-venture partner with WEFA, CIEMEX-WEFA supplies its highly regarded "sister
company" with analysis and forecasts of the Mexican economy. CIEMEX-WEFA, in turn,
benefits from WEFAs analysis and forecasts of over 100 economies in the world.
Since its founding, CIEMEX-WEFA has trained economists from around
the world. CIEMEX-type centers now exist in Brazil, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain and
Venezuela.
